You'll usually need to change trains at Jibou, 76km northwest of Dej,
for Salaj county's capital, ZALAU , 23km to the west, and also connected
by bus to Cluj, Oradea, Huedin and Baia Mare. Zalau is in fact little
more than a small country town with a large industrial fringe grafted on
since World War II. There's nothing of interest in town beyond the
county museum at Str. Pietei 9 (Tues-Sun 10am-6pm), which has a good
archeological display; the art section is not far south at Str. Gheorghe
Doja 6. On the hill overlooking the central Piata Pietei a big, low,
green-roofed Reformat church sits above a Baroque Roman Catholic church
with trompe l'oeil paintings.
Zalau has two central hotels , just to the north of the museum: the
Porolissum , on Piata Unirii (tel & fax 060/613 301; $15-20), and
immediately behind it the better Meses (tel 060/661 050, fax 613 093;
$25-35). In addition there's the Stadion (tel 060/604 363, fax 662 897;
$10-15), two blocks up the hill from the Art Museum behind the stadium,
and a small motel (tel 094/545 438; $6-10) on the main road north. The
bus station is about twenty minutes' walk north of the centre at Str.
Mihai Viteazul 54, and the train station is a further thirty minutes
north, at the south end of the village of Criseni; buses #1 and #2 and
maxitaxis link them both to the centre, taking about fifteen minutes
from the train station.
