| About 12km west of Poiana Brasov on the road to Bran, half an hour
from Brasov by bus or train, is RĀSNOV (Rosenau to the Saxons), where a
ruined castle crowns the fir-covered hill that overlooks the town. This
was founded in the early thirteenth century by the Teutonic Knights (
Deutscheritterorden ), who were soon expelled from Transylvania, but
what you see now are the remains of a fourteenth-century structure. To
visit the castle (Tues-Sun 10am-6pm), head through the archway and up
the steps opposite the BCR bank on Piata Unirii, just south of the
Lutheran church. Under two hundred Saxons remain here today; their
church was founded in 1360 but never fortified due to the presence of
the castle above. It can be visited by asking at the Pfarrhaus (parish
house), two doors along the Brasov road. On the far side of the castle
is the Cabana Rāsnov (tel 068/230 266; $6-10), a decent restaurant with
rooms , and a relatively good campsite ; to get there, take Strada
Cetatii (the Poiana Brasov road) from the south end of Piata Unirii. |
