PREDEAL

PREDEAL , sitting on the 1038-metre pass of the same name and marking the official border of Transylvania, is further from the more spectacular peaks that dominate Sinaia and Busteni to the south, but is a popular centre for skiing and easy strolls. There's a reasonable choice of accommodation in town, which can be booked either through the accommodation agency ( dispecerat cazare ) behind the post office at Str. Panduri 6 (tel 068/455 042), or the tourist offices at B-dul Saulescu 117 (tel & fax 068/455 330, www.predeal.ro ) or outside the station (tel 068/456 972). The Carmen , a good private hotel just south of the station at B-dul Saulescu 121 (tel 068/456 656, fax 455 426; $15-20), can also provide slightly cheaper rooms in villas. North of the station is the Bulevard , B-dul Saulescu 129 (tel 068/456 022, fax 455 325; $6-10), a neo-Brâncovenesc pile with an attractive stair- and lift-well, probably the only really atmospheric place in town. Further north, on Strada Trei Brazi, are the Cirus , an old-style ski chalet (tel 068/456 035; $6-10), and the Orizont (tel 068/455 150, fax 455 472, orizont@com.pcnet.ro ; $25-35), the resort's best modern hotel. Turning east along Bulevardul Libertatii you'll come to Cioplea, the area formerly patronized by the nomenclatura and Party members for their skiing holidays; here, the Hotel Belvedere at no. 102 (tel 068/456 870, fax 456 871; $15-20) is very modern, with sauna and gym.

The Casa Taraneasca restaurant at B-dul Libertatii 63 (tel 068/456 661) is the top place in town; Ceausescu used to dine here and it still serves up fine rustic cuisine such as pheasant soup. Alternatively, Mama Maria , Str. Eminescu 28 (tel 068/456 650; closed Tues), serves good standard Romanian fare, or for those prefering to cater for themselves, there's a food shop opposite the Hotel Carmen . The Fulg de Neŕ at Str. Teleferic 1, on the way to the Clabucet chairlift, has the best bar in town, and good food too.

Ski equipment can be rented at the Orizont and Cioplea hotels, at the Fulg de Neŕ , or the Clabucet-Sosire chairlift terminal; there's also a rental place at B-dul Saulescu 134 in the centre of town, but here the gear may be worn out. For cross-country skiing, there's a figure-of-eight track 2km south of town at the Râsnov junction. The only ATM in town is at the huge modern BRD building south of the centre.
