BUSTENI |

Ten kilometres up the valley from Sinaia is BUSTENI (883m), a small
resort overshadowed by the sheer peaks of Caraiman (2384m) and Costila
(2498m), and separated from each other by the dark Alba valley and the
highest conglomerate cliffs in Europe. Caraiman is identified by a huge
cross, a war memorial erected in the 1920s, and Costila by a TV tower
that looks like a space rocket. There's nothing much to Busteni itself,
but it's a good base for the excellent walking to be had in the
surrounding mountains.
From the train station , which more or less defines the town centre,
it's just a few hundred metres south on the main DN1 to the pleasant,
privatized Caraiman hotel at B-dul Libertatii 89 (tel 044/320 156;
$6-10); further south, at Str. Telecabiniei 39, is the Silva (tel
044/321 412, fax 320 950; $10-15), Busteni's most comfortable hotel. To
the north at B-dul Libertatii 153, the Hotel Savinex BTT (tel 044/320
138, fax 320 056; under $6) is a former youth hotel now open to all ages,
with a lively disco and sports facilities. Finally, across the tracks to
the southeast in the Zamora quarter, is the friendly and informal Motel
Maximilian , Str. Pescariei 8 (tel 044/323 297; under $6), most easily
reached by car (take the first turning left south of Strada Telecabinei).
It's also worth enquiring at the tourist office (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm, Sat
9am-noon; tel 044/320 027) at Str. Libertatii 202, 150m north of the
train station, about private rooms (under $6). The Caminul Alpin cabana
(tel 044/320 167; under $6) at the top of Strada Valea Alba, just north
of the station, is still run in the lax old state-owned manner, opening
only when they can be bothered. The Azuga campsite is about 1km north
along the main DN1, but is close to the train line and so very noisy.
Mountain bikes can be rented a couple of kilometres further on in the
village of Azuga.
The best restaurants are in the Silva and Caraiman hotels; the Cofetaria
Roza opposite the train station offers snack-sized pizzas as well as
coffee and cakes.
